Description
Let us understand the Vedic Pooja for the Moon, commonly known as Chandra Shanti Yagya or Moon Shanti Yagya.
Chandra Shanti Yagya is recommended to reduce the negative effects of an afflicted Moon in the birth chart and to strengthen the positive influence of a favorable Moon. This sacred ritual helps eliminate negativity while enhancing peace, emotional stability, and overall well-being. The Yagya generally begins on a Monday and is conducted according to Vedic traditions. Depending on the ritual requirements, the chanting of the Chandra Vedic Mantra is usually completed within one day. The complete process of this ritual is known as Chandra Pooja Vidhi, which involves several important steps.
The most essential part of the Yagya is the chanting of 11,000 Chandra Vedic Mantras. The success of the entire ritual revolves around these sacred chants. Before the chanting begins, the chief priest performs a Sankalp (sacred resolution) on behalf of the devotee and the assisting priests. During the Sankalp, the devotee’s name, father’s name, Gotra, the names of the participating priests, and the duration of the ritual are formally declared. It is also stated that 11,000 Chandra Vedic Mantras will be chanted to pacify the malefic Moon or strengthen its benefic effects and to seek divine blessings for the devotee. Any personal prayers or special wishes requested by the devotee are also included during this stage.
After the Sankalp, the priests continuously chant the Chandra Vedic Mantras until the prescribed count is completed. Once the chanting concludes, a completion ceremony is performed in which the deities and members of Lord Shiva’s family are worshipped with offerings such as flowers, fruits, sweets, halwa, incense, lamps, milk, curd, honey, pure ghee, sugar, and other sacred items. During this ceremony, the chief priest prays for the successful completion of the Yagya and requests divine blessings for the devotee, seeking relief from the adverse effects of the Moon or enhancement of its positive influence.
The important planets of the Navgraha are also honored through offerings and donations during the concluding rituals. These offerings may include copper, sugar, wheat, rice, milk, oil, utensils, pulses, lentils, moles, and other prescribed items. After receiving blessings from the deities, the ritual proceeds to the final stage, known as Havan (Homa).
Havan is one of the most powerful and significant parts of the Chandra Shanti Yagya and should only be performed by experienced and qualified Vedic priests. During this sacred fire ritual, Vedic mantras establish a spiritual connection between the Moon and the devotee. A sacred fire is lit in the Havan Kund, and with the completion of each mantra, an offering is made into the fire while chanting the sacred word “Swaha.” This process continues throughout the Havan with complete precision and devotion. The Havan Samagri used may vary depending on the specific ritual being performed.
The priests chant the mantras on behalf of the devotee. After the Havan is completed, the devotee is asked to perform Parikrama (circumambulation) around the Havan Kund. Depending on the ritual, one, three, or seven rounds may be performed. This marks the successful completion of the Chandra Pooja.
All these rituals should be performed strictly according to the procedures prescribed in Vedic Jyotish by learned priests. Skipping any step or not following the prescribed method may reduce the effectiveness of the Yagya. During the entire period of the Pooja, the devotee is advised to observe certain disciplines. Alcohol consumption and smoking should be completely avoided. The devotee should maintain good conduct, refrain from violence, avoid non-vegetarian food, and abstain from physical or sexual relations until the completion of the ritual. Waking up early, taking a bath, offering prayers, and remaining spiritually connected with Lord Chandra throughout the Yagya are also recommended.
An important feature of Chandra Shanti Yagya is that it can be performed either in the presence or absence of the devotee. If the devotee is unable to attend due to unavoidable circumstances, the priests can perform the entire ritual on their behalf. A photograph of the devotee is placed as a symbolic representation, and the chief priest performs the Sankalp using the devotee’s details while praying for their well-being and blessings. Thus, the Yagya remains equally effective whether or not the devotee is physically present.
Upon the successful completion of the chanting of 11,000 Chandra Vedic Mantras and all the prescribed rituals, the devotee may experience relief from the negative effects of an afflicted Moon and receive the positive blessings of a benefic Moon in the horoscope.
