Historical Background

Origins of ISKCON

The history of the Abidjan Krishna-consciousness centre is connected with the much larger global history of ISKCON.

ISKCON was founded in 1966 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. He travelled from India to the United States with the aim of sharing the teachings of Lord Krishna and introducing the spiritual practice of bhakti-yoga to people across the world.

The movement has its roots in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, a devotional lineage strongly connected with Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. ISKCON promotes loving devotion to Krishna through various spiritual practices, including chanting the holy names, studying sacred scriptures, worship, and engaging in devotional service.

Krishna Consciousness Reaches Africa

As ISKCON expanded internationally, Krishna-consciousness communities developed in different parts of Africa. Côte d’Ivoire became one of the countries where devotees established a local Krishna-consciousness presence.

Historical directories linked to the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust Africa have listed the ISKCON Côte d’Ivoire Temple Hare Krishna in Cocody, Abidjan, indicating the existence of an organized ISKCON presence in the city.

The ISKCON Consciousness Centre/Temple was stablished around in or before 1987. Background Facts are;

On 14 June 2015, His Holiness Kavicandra Maharaja awarded sannyasa to Carudesn Prabhu. Following his initiation into the renounced order, he received the sannyasa name His Holiness Bhakti Carudesna Swami.

In 1987, while Bhakti Carudesna Swami was a college student, he met a Sankirtan devotee who introduced him to Srila Prabhupada’s Science of Self-realization. A few months later, in the same year, he joined the temple. He became deeply inspired to assist in Srila Prabhupada’s mission and to spread Krishna consciousness in his native country, Ivory Coast.

In 1989, Carudesna received his first initiation from His Holiness Bhakti Tirtha Maharaja, followed by his second initiation in 1995. In that same year, he took on the responsibility of serving as the Temple President in Ivory Coast.

In 2002, Carudesna travelled to Mayapura, where he completed the Bhakti-sastri course. He also went to Vrindavana to attend the ISKCON Leadership and Management course.

Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) is a French-speaking country. Therefore, whenever His Holiness Bhakti Tirtha Maharaja visited the country, Carudesna served as his translator during television and radio programmes, as well as conferences. He also provided translation services for His Holiness Kavicandra Maharaja and His Holiness Bhakti Dhira Damodara Maharaja during their visits to Ivory Coast.

Legendary and Mythological Origins

Lord Krishna in Vaishnava Tradition

The spiritual foundation of the temple goes back much further than the establishment of ISKCON itself.

In Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Lord Krishna is worshipped as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Stories of Krishna’s childhood, youth and divine activities are extensively described in texts including the Srimad-Bhagavatam.

Krishna’s teachings to Arjuna in the Bhagavad-gita form another central foundation of ISKCON philosophy. The text discusses the nature of the soul, karma, dharma, devotion and the relationship between the individual soul and the Supreme.

Bhakti-Yoga and Devotional Service

The spiritual path emphasized by ISKCON is bhakti-yoga, the path of loving devotion to God.

Devotees cultivate Krishna consciousness through:

  • Chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra
  • Hearing and studying sacred scriptures
  • Worship and prayer
  • Association with devotees
  • Vegetarian prasadam
  • Devotional service, or seva
  • Congregational kirtan
  • ISKCON describes its philosophical foundation as rooted particularly in the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam.

    Hare Krishna Maha-Mantra

A central devotional practice is chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare

The mantra is chanted individually and collectively as part of the bhakti-yoga tradition.
