There is a huge crowd of Shiva devotees here during the month of Shivratri and Sawan.

The story of the hill temple of Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand is very interesting. This temple of Lord Shiva situated on the mountain was under the control of the British before the independence of the country and they used to hang the freedom fighters here. Since independence, the national flag is hoisted at this temple along with religious flags on Independence Day and Republic Day. This is the first temple in the country where the tricolor is hoisted.

Located 7 km away from Ranchi Railway Station, this temple of Lord Shiva is known as Pahari Temple. The old name of Pahari Baba Temple was Tiriburu, which later changed to ‘Hanging Garry’ during the British period, because freedom fighters were hanged here during the British rule.

After independence, the tricolor flag was first hoisted here in Ranchi, which was hoisted by Ranchi’s freedom fighter Krishna Chandra Das. He hoisted the tricolor here in memory and honor of the martyred freedom fighters. Since then, the tricolor is hoisted here every year on Independence Day and Republic Day. There is a stone in the hill temple, on which the message of the country’s independence is written on the midnight of 14 and 15 August 1947.
