There is currently no prominent or well-established public Hindu temple within Mamit district of Mizoram. Although an archaeological site containing Hindu- and Buddhist-influenced sculptures dating to the 8th century CE was discovered at Kolalian village in Mamit district, the active Hindu temples of Mizoram are mainly concentrated in the state capital, Aizawl.
Local Demographics: Mizoram is a predominantly Christian-majority state. Hindus constitute a small minority, accounting for approximately 2.75% of the state’s population, with communities mainly found in Aizawl and in certain border or migrant-populated areas.
Border Controversies: Earlier efforts by outside organizations to establish a Shiva temple at Thaidawr Tlang, near Phuldungsei in Mamit district along the Tripura–Mizoram border, encountered administrative restrictions and prohibitory orders. These measures were associated with the absence of required state permissions as well as local sensitivities surrounding the proposed construction.
Main Temples in the State: Most functioning Hindu temples in Mizoram, including Shankar Mandir, Kali Temple, and Gorkha Mandir, are situated in Aizawl. These temples are generally managed collectively by the respective local Hindu communities rather than being located in Mamit district.
